17 Jan 2006 - Wow! One hundred and forty kids take over the Arena Leisure Centre
Confidently ushering in 2006 one hundred and forty young Mytchett Athletic Football Club players took over the main hall Arena Leisure Centre Camberley on Friday 30th December to enjoy their annual winter soccer fest. Eighty plus 8-10 year olds competed in the morning tournament, whilst fifty five more 11-13 year olds joined the afternoon tournament. Club officials were especially delighted by the turn out of nearly two hundred spectators, mums, dads, family and friends who turned out to cheer on the kids whether they played for bears, badgers, lions or tigers. Older players competing in the afternoon entered the fray using team names such as, Vipers, Pythons, Mambas and Adders. In between matches the relative merits of each were then hotly contested... 'listen Tom, you know that Mambas are better strikers than Vipers'.
Eighteen Under 10 girls joined the tournament and proved amongst the most competitive players. Commenting on their experience their Manager Helene Langdon noted, 'the girls have found a very warm and welcoming club in Mytchett Athletic and throughly enjoy their football. Tournaments like this are just what we need to blow away the winter cobwebs'.
